Peter Pan’s Shadow by Cindy Goeddel
Wildlife photography of a Red Fox performing a mousing leap to catch prey hidden under the snow.
A sly Red Fox leaps through the brilliant light of a crisp Winter day on frozen rolling hills in Yellowstone National Park’s Hayden Valley. Foxes, like coyotes, employ a Winter hunting technique known as mousing leaps. Using their incredibly well developed sense of hearing, the animals hone in and locate mice and other small rodents under the snow from faint sounds the prey make, then suddenly jump and drive their paws and face into the snow to capture the meal.
