Wildlife photography of a North American River Otter running across a log carrying a Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone National Park

In this Best of Show photograph from the 2014 NANPA competition, a North American River Otter runs across a floating log with a large Native Cutthroat Trout it has caught in Yellowstone National Park’s Upper Lamar Valley. Famously playful and winsome, otters also show a strong nurturing instinct. This particular one was a mother of three pups, one with a spinal injury that left it unable to use its hind legs. She caught a fish for each of the other two, then one for the injured pup so that it could eat without competition. Only then did she catch a fish for herself.
