In this intimately tender moment, a mother American Bison and her still wet calf just moments old meet for the very first time in Yellowstone National Park’s Lamar Valley. Bison typically give birth between late March and May and the calves are nicknamed “red dogs” because of their orange-red coloring. Within a few months though, the hair begins turning dark brown and the iconic shoulder hump and horns begin to develop.
