Cindy Goeddel journeys to Antarctica. Follow her blog to experience her observations and photographs from this awe-inspiring continent.

As a wildlife photographer some places in the world are simply transcendent experiences – Winter in Yellowstone, the Okavango Delta, the Serengeti, the Pantanal, the Katmai Peninsula and the Galapagos Archipelago to name but a few.  However, this Fall – or Spring if you are upside down – an opportunity arrived out of the blue to visit one of the most incredible photo destinations anywhere.

Antarctica. South Georgia. Falklands. Seriously!

Fran Woodworth, a great friend and longtime alumni of my wildlife photography workshops, both humbled and thrilled me with an invitation to join her on the voyage of the National Geographic Endurance.  This latest generation passenger icebreaker and research vessel operated by Lindblad Expeditions is embarking on a three week voyage out of Ushuaia Argentina, the Southernmost city on Earth, to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands.

It will be an extraordinary photographic adventure, with daily photographic opportunities to some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes on Earth.  We will visit historic sites on both land and sea, many associated with the legendary Shackleton Expedition.  The ship is equipped with underwater cameras, which will allow us to view footage captured by the onboard marine naturalist.

It truly is the wildlife photography opportunity of a lifetime and, as you can imagine, I am ecstatic, honored and grateful to be so lucky to experience it.  I can’t wait to share the adventure with you, so please check back on this blog often.  I will try to post my observations and wildlife photography most days, from a place about as otherworldly as you can get anywhere on planet Earth.
